Grand Turk

Grand Turk is the nation’s capital. The main Turks and Caicos government offices are located on the island as well as the Governor’s residence. It’s located 90 miles southeast of Provo – a half an hour plane ride.

The island is quaint and historic with its historical buildings still in use, stone walls and ornamental gates. There is an International Airport that is sleek and modern and has regular flights from Providenciales and other islands. There is also a Philatelic Bureau for avid stamp collectors.

Local restaurants keep to the island style with locally caught specials such as grouper, snapper, lobster and conch, Turks and Caicos dining at its freshest. You may be entertained by talented local musicians while dining.

Conch is one of the export products of the islands. Much of the conch served in the Florida Cays is from the Turks and Caicos Islands. Lobster is another export product although lobster fishing allowed only from August to February.

Diving is coveted; this considered one of the world’s premiere dive destinations. If you are spending any time on Grand Turk you will certainly visit the National Museum, located in the 150-year-old Guinep Lodge; the exhibits will tell the story of the islands beginning from their Lucayan Indian roots.

In 2006 saw the opening of Grand Turk Cruise Centre, the only island to welcome cruise ships with its deep-water port. Over 700,000 passengers visit annually.
